I visit my sister's house every other day. We are a close family. Even though I have seen her display cabinet 1000 times over it was only the other day I realised that we really do share the same tastes. So I thought I would share a few of her favourite things. So I ask you. Do you think taste in style runs in the blood ? Is it something you are born with, without your own consent ?
lovely cupboard! P.S I'm always arranging and rearranging my sister's house - while she does love me doing it, we have completely different styles. I seem to be the only one in the family who has the decorating bug
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this cabinet and everything in it, it's gorgeous!! The same style doesn't run in my family, my sister loves contemporay and minimalist which is so not me! Her house looks like one of those real estate shows where they are uncluttered and dressed to sell!! I try to keep clutter to a minimum but I love my collections too much
ReplyDeleteI like how you phrased that..."without your consent"! It must, somehow, run in the blood, so many times, my sisters & I have, unknowingly, bought the same odd little trinkets for each other! It must surely be genetic!
ReplyDeletem ^..^
I love her cabinet - it's gorgeous! Not sure that taste runs in the family - my husband has great tatse and interests and his family have zilch! My mum was one of 10 and said she always felt different and liked things a certain way and she has a real artistic flair that none of her siblings have. I think it is something you are born with but can obviously be influenced by those you are brought up with.
ReplyDeletesomething I think about alot, did I get it from mum, or hang on, is it dad(which comes from his mother)... I think it goes way back beyond lots of generations and how we are brought up. Specially if you are'nt born into wealth. There is a real respect for treasures and things that are of sentimental value. I could go on forever on this subject.
ReplyDeleteLove her style too! by the way
Oh wow, that cabinet is so pretty! Love that color!
ReplyDeleteSimone, I really enjoying visiting your blog. Your sisters cabinet is just gorgeous. You must enjoy being able to share common interests and styles. My brother and I are nothing alike. He is probably more like my parents. They like clean, neat lines where I like things a little worn so that it has a comfy, welcoming feel.
ReplyDeleteYes and no ! I do share some tastes with my parents but I absorbed many other influences since I live in another country (Holland). Therefore... a new environment/culture has huge impact on our tastes !
ReplyDeleteI think so ! however, I share nothing with my family in this regard.. this kind of Vintage mix and match is not viewed nicely in Kuwait. the culture here is based on the idea that second hand or vintage is not supposed to be used and it would show a person as a " low class" one.
ReplyDeletethey go towards luxury which is totally not my taste. I find luxury in the past.
so to me, it doesnt run in the blood lol
Seeing as you are brought up together, I think your tastes are similar. My sister's and mine are. And my mum's. I think you learn from your parents about taste, as you are brought up surrounded by their tastes!
ReplyDeletePretty display, I think you need to post more pictures of your sister's house!
ReplyDeleteI don't think decorating taste runs in the family, but I think it does run in friendships! I've noticed a lot of my friends and I share similar styles in decorating (at least the ones I feel closest to).
ReplyDeleteI love your sister's cabinet, it's a beautiful display!
Everytime my sisters and I get together we oooh and ahhh over each others decor, and then we usually beg to keep a knick-knack that we fall in love with. We end up trading a lot of stuff.
ReplyDeleteI don't have sisters but my mum and my style is very, very different. What i did catch from her is her inflexibility at yoga!! Oh well, cant have everything xx
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately I'm an only child, so I have no idea if it is in the bloodline...my mother and I share a bit of the same taste, but only on the more traditional items.
ReplyDeleteType of taste maybe doesn't run in the blood but definitely sense of style does that! I like the miniature tea pot and cups, and the flowery cans. Looking sweet!
ReplyDeleteoh i am so excited...i love your blog!! So much my style...you inspire me!!!
ReplyDeleteI think that your mom must of had an influence on you both...is that true? If not my theory has gone down the drain...but you both have amazing style!!! xoxo
Your blog is gorgeous! Thanks for adding me to your blogroll. I'll add you to mine as well. I'm a little behind on things. My sister and are very different and have different taste but then sometimes it is very much the same. It's fun to think about and compare!

My mom and I have similar taste but I like things a little more colorful and bold than she does. That first photo her shelf is just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat cabinet is gorgeous and the perfect shade of pink! I'm not sure style taste runs in the blood...my sister and I have completely opposite taste. I think style and tastes are about as individual and unique as each person is.
ReplyDeleteThat pink cabinet is precious. I often think about why I am drawn to certain things. I know that it was passed down from my dad and out of five siblings three of us are clearly chips off the old block.
ReplyDeletemy sister and I couldn't by any more different. she likes dark furniture, I like light. She pulls down the shades, I open them.
ReplyDeleteAnywho, I love that pink cabinet @your sis's place. My sis and I have little in common but it's all good :)
I think it works both ways. Some taste you 'absorb' while growing up, but then, over time and with the experiences you have, you develop your own style. My mother (and most relatives on her side of the family) is a huge pack rat. Me? Not os much. I say that I am a pack mouse. I can easily give things away, but I always keep my collections and the things I truly love.
ReplyDeleteI love that cabinet and can see lots of pretty things in it! How nice that you and your sister share the same taste.
ReplyDeleteMy mother has great style and we definitely share the same tastes.
Simone :)
Hi Simone, Excellent question!! One I have often pondered on myself. I would say we are definetly influenced for good or ill by those we love. It is natural I feel to gravitate towards items that make us feel good and warm and safe. So many people will tell you that a collection has started from an item that belonged to a favourite Grandparent or Aunt etc. I know with my own style I have inherited much from my Grandmother but interestingly it is my Mother in law who through her love or house and garden who I would say influenced me the most. So in answer to the question, I would say Style runs from those we love not necessarily in the blood.
ReplyDeleteHello! I'm new to your blog and I love it! My vintage style doesn't run in my family. Out of six siblings, I'm the only one who likes old, cheap stuff!
ReplyDeleteHi Simone-
ReplyDeleteI certainly agree with you that style runs in the blood. I have an aunt who is a designer and she and I have a lot in common when it comes to designing a home. Thanks for visiting me the other day!
=marie
To a certain extent or osmosis we all take on similar likes... and w/everyone being different I think the styles we have in common are tweaked a little by our own ideals...and that's what makes them unique but somewhat similar.
ReplyDeleteHello Simone,
ReplyDeleteI have just discovered your lovely Blog through Anna's Absaloutely Beautiful Things. I also love pink and blue, the beach and vintage. I really love the way you explain how to create projects here! When it comes to inheriting taste from your family, I would have said no, I had nothing in common but when I think about it we really are very similar. We all like antiques, vintage, old stone houses. I think we are more alike in our style than I may have ever realised! Enjoy your weekend.
I think the home you grew up in generally have a great influence on your grown up life. When I visit my brother or my sister it feels almost like my own home. I love your blog. Found you via desire to inspire.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comment above... Often taste depends on what you grew up with, though sometimes you can rebel against your parents taste and go for something completely different!
ReplyDeleteI have two sisters, and one of them has very similar taste to me, but the other one has completely different tastes in everything (clothes, books, movies, men...) it's strange because she and I are actually identical twins.
Love your blog and your sister's cabinet is TO Die For!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Sheila
