Cubby Play House Envy

I used to make my own cubby/play houses as a kid from all sorts of things. Chairs, wood, metal - basically anything I could get my hands on. So when I saw this interior of a cubby house in the USA I almost lost my breath. Can you imagine if it was yours when you were a kid? Did you have a cubby or playhouse?

  2. That is a brilliant cubbyhouse. But Simone, I bet your imagination got more of a workout through your fantasy play than the children who have this cubby.

  3. Hi Simone
This playhouse is AMAZING!! We too made what we called "dens" out of blankets, chairs, boxes....my children do the same thing now. Nothing like this though....wow!
    Have a good week!

  4. that is a super chic cubby!! - My sister and I were the same, our cubbies were quite elaborate and would even fight over who had to do the washing up after making the mud pies!
That floor is to die for x

  6. I also made my own out of old shoe boxes. I hadn't thought of that in decades. Thanks for bringing back a fond memory... (that also explains how early on I was fascinated by 'home decor')!

  8. Oh, Simone you've brought back such wonderful memories! My sister and I used to do that all the time, we had this little cubby hole in the attic and our Mom put down a piece of carpet for us, and my sister and I collected all sorts of things to put in there for our comfort (old couch cushions and pillows, we made a table by balancing a piece of wood atop an old box. It was such fun! In my mind it looked just like your picture, in reality it was far from that!

  11. I used to make myself playhouse from scratch ..linen sheetsn chairs and soft vintage blanket for instance :) But the master of playhouse , with a big M, was my grand fahter, my Papi, who contructed us (my cousins , my brother and sister and I) a big playhouse each year. it was made of fifferent things, and "built" in different places each year !!! we had so much fun .. the best part was probably helping him to make some plans and then the construction.

  15. Hi Simone,

What a fantastic play house! I had one when I was a kid and although I loved it, it looked nothing like this one! Thanks for sharing.

  16. Wow, fabulous! Unfortunately the closest I came to a playhouse was drawing furniture, etc on the walls inside giant cardboard boxes!

  17. Wow, that is amazing! I didn't have a cubby, but I had the great outdoors! We have a couple of acres of land in UT where I grew up and I was in love (still am) with nature. But this is awesome! Makes me inspired to create a fun dwelling for my kids some day. Glad I found your blog! I love vintage too! :)

  19. Yes, I did have a playhouse when I was little. My father made it for me, and it was the same color as our real house (yellow!). It had a dutch door, and paned glas windows that open out and latched open. I loved it and wish I had it today. I would spend hours and hours just hanging out in it. It was not as fabulous as the one you posted on, but I thought it was! It rotted and collapsed a number of years ago! At one point there was a family of racoons that made it home, another time a lost doggy had her puppies in it!
Good to know that crawfish are yabbies. If I'm ever fortunate to visit Oz I'll know what to order!

  20. i didn't have anything quite as cool as that! although, no one did in my neck of the woods. nope, my cubby (or clubhouse, as i called it) was always in my closet. i would clean it out and hang posters and things and stay in there all day long.

  21. Play house, smlay house! I'd move into this tiny jewel right now! The only play house I had growing up was a blanket draped strategically across chairs, tables and beds. Doesn't quite measure up does it? Oh, I must have been a very neglected child. ;-)
