Breaking Rules

Pictures all from flickr
I don't have any formal qualifications in decorating. I read a lot though. I came across an old saying in colour and design theory that stated: "Blue with Green should never be seen". Go figure....Does anyone know of any other decorating "rules" that were meant to be broken?

  3. When I was a kid (not that long ago) It was blue and green should never be seen especially in the presense of the Queen !My dear dad would say "crikey they're Gods colours of course they look great together !" Did you ever think you would get so much useless info in one comment , lol !

  4. Well, I'm not sure if these were meant to be broken but I break them!
"Don't make your favorite color the main color of the room".
I say if you love it you can make it the main color of the room! If it's soothing to you and makes you feel comfortable and secure, go for it!

    "Don't have mismatched furniture".
I LOVE mismatched furniture! I hate when a room looks like it belongs in a department store display! No personality.

"Don't display personal items". I can see maybe if you are trying to sell your home, but if you are living in it, I think it's wonderful to see the things that each person holds dear. And I think it adds a bit of interest to a room.

AND I love blue and green together!

    Great post, Simone!
    All the best,
    Eileen

  13. I'd amend it to 'Navy blue and bottle green should never be seen'. At all. Either together or separately. I particularly like the restful 2nd photo.

  16. What your photos show is analogous color scheme. It is achieved by taking consecutive colors on the color wheel and using them in a room. You can use up to 5 consecutive colors and not break rules. I wouldn't recommend using pure blue and pure green, as they are not consecutive, add a blue green and you have something. You have shades, tones and tints with in those colors to use too.

  20. I love blue and green. I also don't follow rules and do what I love, so "poo" on the rules! ;)

  21. Who makes up these rules? And did it explain WHY blue and green should not be used together? I've said it before and I'll say it again now, do what YOU love and don't worry about what anyone else says or does. And for what it's worth, I think blue and green look great together!

  23. Oh, I love the first photo so much! I like blue and green together. I think that as long as something feels good to you then it works just fine.

  24. I think most decorating "rules" have room to be broken. Some of the prettiest rooms I've seen are done with broken rules!

  25. I love those light fittings!! The colours are just too beautiful together! A saying I've learnt over the years is "the plan is not to plan"... Will think of other rules but I also agree, rules are made to be broken! Px

  26. There was the old advice that decorating with different patterns was a no-no, which is ignored nowadays. I love the look of clashing floral cushions on a sofa for example. I wear a lot of blue and green together and love it in decorating too.

  28. Blue and green like the sky and the grass or trees? Oh, God made a big mistake then! LOL! Seriously, sometimes designers state an opinion and then make it a "rule" to follow.

The rule I have a problem with - "Form follows function." Ok, if something is totally unusable as a chair and it's the only place to sit but it's beautiful then follow the rule. But I'm not sacrificing beauty because some ugly thing is "more functional" than the form I like. Break the rules! It's your house!

  30. My sewing teacher says learn the rules and then you can break them. I like that. I don't like rules. Just do what works, right?! I've totally had blue and green on my mind. I have a green kitchen and while watching Julie & Julia for the second time I thought, "Hmmm, her kitchen has that beautiful blue with the green. I think I'll add blue curtains!"
